Dear Factom Community

Q1 has been a bumpy ride for us at Blockrock Mining. Just when we start to feel on track, a new challenge always seems to come along.

Pledges
In our previous update, we were working hard on implementing heat recovery with energy sensor data securely stored on the blockchain. We were held back by huge local demand for HVAC, making it hard to get a hold of HVAC specialist resources. While the situation has improved with regards to demand, the HVAC company we work with has had key personnel on parental leave (socialist countries, right?) making it hard to maintain any momentum on the task at hand.

We have verbal confirmation that resources will become available in Q2, meaning we should have a working product by the end of Q3. The current plan is to combine LoRaWan sensor with TFA’s IoT device to secure data.

Regretting and acknowledging our failure to deliver key pledges within a reasonable amount of time, we have decided to try making up for it by increasing efficiency into infrastructure-levels. We’ll also pledge to stand in front of the line to volunteer to drop one of our nodes in the name of decentralization once the ANO number increases beyond the two-each-threshold.

Other contributions
  • Jens sponsored a somewhat controversial marketing committee grant.
  • Gieril contributed to make the Python “hello world” developer example published.
  • Testnet documentation is now ported into the developer portal.
  • The “dockerized factom sandbox” is updated and maintained by Gieril.
  • The developer portal (developers.factomprotocol.org) is cleaned up and improved.
  • Joined the new website committee that will govern the community website.
Meanwhile..
..we have now finally completed migration away from shared/cloud hosting for all our nodes, including backup and testnet nodes. We now proudly host dedicated Factom nodes in Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark - still provided by Blix Solutions. Backup and testnet nodes are run on dedicated hardware, but resources are shared.

..increased power pricing this winter forced us to shut down the less power efficient parts of our mining operation. It’s not great, but it allows us to focus on ongoing software projects rather than worrying about capacity and expanding.

..Factom/Ledger video guide is in the works. If you have any other video ideas, we would love to hear from you.

Dear Factom Community,

First off, we want to congratulate the community with promoting and developing Factom in a meaningful direction. The amazing new Standing-system really forces standing parties to be accountable for their contributions. We sincerely welcome this change.

This being said, we understand that our standing is not particularly high at the moment. Our business has been under pressure and we simply haven’t been able to adapt, almost to the point of neglection.

The last month, we’ve had to take major steps to get our business straight. We’re restructuring internally, by removing individuals simply not contributing, and we’re in talks with onboarding replacements. We’re rebranding and shifting our focus. Blockrock Mining is becoming Vavut Tech. With this, we’re down scaling our mining focus. Not only by brand, but a large number of graphics cards have already been shipped to happy gamers getting a good deal.

Lately we have not been able to contribute in a way we'd like, but we would like to remind the community of some previous contributions, showing that when focused we can deliver good value:
  • We played a major part in the documentation of setting up a node.
  • The guide-videos are back up and ownership is being transferred to the Factom Protocol YouTube.
  • We have had among the highest efficiencies all along and contribute with a free node to the Open Node Project.
  • A lot of our time and effort has been put into coding the accounting system provided free of charge to applicable ANOs.
We realize and acknowledge our negligence the last 6 months, but we’re pointing out that when we function, we provide results.

Moving forward the restructuring has affirmed our continued commitment to contribute to the Factom Protocol, rather than pull out and shut down (which has been a real option the last month). Promises are easy to give, so based on how we've delivered in the past, feel free to remove standing. going forward, however, we are going to:
  • Increased efficiency. We’ll bump it to 65%.
  • Take an active part in helping interested parties to get their node started, specifically by offering assistance in documentation and questions to the newly elected Testnet administrator.
  • Get documentation working group up and running again.
  • Actively contribute in governance discussions and votes.
  • Continue providing a free node to Factom Open Node.
and we hope you guys re-instate standing based on what we are doing over the next couple of weeks and months.

I noticed that your ANO didn’t re-evaluate standing votes after initially giving standing to all ANOs.

Are you going to do it and when?
I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I went through ANO updates and looked through what I can about most of the ANOs. I didn't as much with the ANOs I work with or with whom I am familiar with their work.

I have recently updated our standing for all ANOs.

Likely there is some process your link represents that I've not figured out.

@PaulSnow it was the question for @Blockrock Mining, as it's their update thread :)
